New road signs ahead / 2024 – Present

Complete redesign of Ukrainian road signs (ongoing).

The road signs in Ukraine are inherited from Soviet design. They are functional but outdated. Modernizing them offers a chance to improve readability, ensure consistency, and better reflect the country’s evolving identity. That’s why I launched New Road Signs Ahead — a pro bono initiative to completely redesign the road signs of my home country.

I’m collaborating with Oleksandr Kolodko, who led the design of Ukraine’s updated road navigation system. Together, we’ve successfully completed projects like Kyiv’s paid parking information signs, and now we’re bringing our expertise and attention to detail to the new road signs project.

Some new Ukrainian warning signs

Our goal is to create a standardized, accessible and ergonomic system, fully aligned with the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals. We study global practices to incorporate the best ideas into every design. To ensure consistency, we advocate for stricter adherence to standards by providing a unified source for manufacturers to produce accurate, high-quality signs.

This project is a passion-driven adventure where I wear many hats: I research global practices, design signs, write detailed blog posts, code the project’s website, and manage the initiative. Our progress is being actively documented at roadsigns.in.ua, where we share updates, comparisons and solutions. The blog is written in Ukrainian, but you can browse the Google-translated version.
